Ph.D. Fellowships#

I am able to supervise dissertation projects in the core areas of the lab: the philosophy of biology, and history and philosophy of science with a strong biological focus. More remote topics are possible, but would depend on an alignment of interests and the availability of other faculty and resources at UCLouvain.

Requirements for entering the UCLouvain doctorate and the competition for obtaining funding are quite difficult, and as such I normally discourage students from pursuing a doctorate here, except in case of specific calls for applications (see below). Students coming from North America must, in most cases, have an independent master’s degree before arriving, which is rare. Students coming from outside Belgium must have finished their master’s degree to be eligible for any of the following funding sources. Arriving with such a source of funding is usually required, as there is no financing from the university’s doctoral school as there would be in North American universities.

Grant Programs#

There are permanent programs that allow you to obtain your own funding, and to customize your project in consultation with me. If you meet the conditions of any of the grants below, please get in touch.

• Each year, we can apply for exactly one grant via the internal research fund known as FSR, although these proposals from our group have been extremely unsuccessful.
• If you are a Belgian student who has completed, or will complete this year, an M120 master, it is possible for you to apply for an FNRS FRESH – Fonds pour la recherche en sciences humaines grant.
• If you are a Belgian or European student who has completed an M120 master, or equivalent (i.e., a two-year master’s degree with master’s thesis), it is possible for you to apply for an FNRS ASP – Aspirant·e grant.
• If you are a Canadian student who wants to work on ethics of technology or environmental ethics, it is possible for you to apply for a grant from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.

Finally, I sometimes offer doctoral positions as a part of other grants for specific projects, which will be advertised on the usual mailing lists (like PHILOS-L, HOPOS-G, and the ISHPSSB newsletter).
